Department of Fishery Biochemistry

Overview

Biochemistry is for every one. It is the central science to both fish biology and fish processing. This department is laying the foundation to have a strong chemical background to make the study of other subjects more lively and meaningful. Nutritionally fish is attracting the attention as healthy food of man. Both poor and rich are equally benefited by its increased consumption. The department is interested  in the omega-3-fatty acid, content of the various marine fishes landed at Mangalore and the study of biochemistry of their health benefits in human diet. Biochemistry being a basic course of great importance to many other fields of fisheries, this unit offers courses both of fundamentals and applied aspects of the subject to all the branches of fisheries science programme at both UG and PG level. There are plans to extend this approach to some more new areas to strengthen the understanding of other subjects.
