ICAR sponsored winter school on Reclamation of Saline and Alkaline Soils through Aquaculture 6-26, Nov 2013

The winter school was organized by Department of Aquatic Environment Management, College of Fisheries, Mangalore during 6-26, Nov 2013. There were 25 participants from four States. The inauguration was held on 6.11.13. Sri. Lakshminatha Reddy, General Manger, Corporation Bank inaugurated the program. He called the professionals to bring economic glamour to the agriculture and allied fields, so that youths remain or choose agriculture as business. Dr. Shivakumar Magada, Professor of Aquatic Biology and the course director presented the concept note and said that if we do not reclaim and conserve these problematic soils, there will be acute food shortage in the years to come he added.
Dr. Shivananda Murthy, Professor and Head was the chief guest. Dr. K. M. Shankar, Dean (Fisheries) presided the function and called the participants to spread this learning to the beneficiaries of their region. Dr. Gangadhara Gowda, Professor and Head proposed vote of thanks. Later on the same day trainees were tested for their knowledge base about the said issues. Knowledge assimilation was evaluated by giving the same question paper after the training program. The uptake of knowledge was tremendous. There were 28 different lectures by the experts and 20 short presentations by the participants. Participants were taken to field trip and soil health laboratories to demonstrate soil sample collection and method demonstration. 
Land to lab Program: This was the unique program where 6 successful farmers shared their success stories and 2 farmers shared their failure stories. All were from Mandya district and actively involved in aquaculture activities. About 6 press reporters present farmers-scientist interaction and covered in leading Kannada and English dailies.
Valedictory function: Dr. Y. Basavaraju, Director of Extension, KVAFSU, Bidar delivered valedictory note. Sri. K.C. Shankaregowda and Sri. T. Mukunda Varma, Hon’ble Members, Board of Management, KVAFSU, Bidar were Guests of Honors. Dr. K. M. Shankar, Dean, College of Fisheries, Mangalore presided over the function. Participants expressed their happiness and satisfaction about the conduct of the program and expressed their gratitude to the course director Dr. Shivakumar Magada. The training manual was released by Sri. T. Mukunda Varma.

World Fisheries Day 2013

On 21 Nov 2013 “World Fisheries Day-2013” was celebrated By Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar in Collaboration with University of Agriculture and Horticultural Sciences, Shimoga and KVK, Chikkamagalur at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Mudigere.  About 110 different stakeholders like academicians, extension workers, NGOs, farmers, press people, business people were present in the function. Dr. Gangadhara Gowda, Professor and Head, Dept. of AEM, College of Fisheries inaugurated the program. Dr. Shivakumar Magada, Professor of Aquatic Biology was the chief guest and said that ‘Future threat to the human kind is not diseases, not war; it is sheer crush humanity and hunger’. Hunger will become a biological base for all worlds’ problems and aquaculture can be a solution’. However, without competing for the good resources, aquaculture can be taken up in waterlogged, D-class lands; there lies 9.0 mh in India he added. Dr. Rangaswamy, Associate Director of Research, Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Mudigere presided over the function. Mr. Swamy, Associate Professor, Dr. D. Madaiah, Associate Director of Extension, Dr. Sumathi, Program Coordinator, KVK, Chikkamagalur were present. Farmer-Scientists interaction was there after the program. All the participants were taken to Krishi Pandith Sri. Naresh farm at Hanbal.


Integrated Coastal Zone Management

Department of Aquatic Environment Management will be conducting a refresher course on "Integrated Coastal Zone Management" from 28-10-2013 to 31-10-2013 funded by Society of Integrated Coastal Management, Ministry of Environment and Forests, New Delhi .  The course shall be is meant for training the state officers and other stakeholders in understanding the basics of ICZM, various components of ICZM and through a process of dialogue and sharing the best practices. The aim of the programme is to enhance the capacity of the State Department(s) in the preparation of Coastal Zone Management Plan.


Mr. Iqlas Ahmed, Associate Professor, College of Fisheries, Mangalore died in a road accident on 21.10.2013. A postgraduate from College of Fisheries, Mangalore served the University as Extension Guide, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor. He was a person of high calibre, knowledge and meticulous with analytical skill was an asset to the University. He has been awarded Best teacher from the Professional Fisheries Graduates Forum, Mumbai. He was grooming final year B.F.Sc students of the college for securing the national level ICAR Junior Research Fellowship over the decade. Mr. Ahmed has guided several M.F.Sc. students in the area of Fish Health Management in Aquaculture. A good researcher, critical analyser and excellent in designing the research experiments. His service will be remembered by one and all in the University.

We deeply mourn on the sudden and unexpected death of Assoc. Professor Iqlas Ahmed on 21-October 2013. May lord almighty give peace to his departed soul and strength to his family. Let the soul rest in peace in the feet of lord almighty.
